Frying Pan Frolic
After a short drive from Aspen, we arrive at the Frying Pan River
drainage, which is surrounded on the three sides by wilderness areas.
We have changed this trip to allow for more time to experience this
area. Spending two nights at the same hut will create a day over in the
backcountry, allowing us to explore the area in more detail.
Starting with a climb out of the Frying Pan River drainage, we'll
arrive at the Harry Gates Hut, which will serve as base camp for the
next two days. There will be lots of biking, hiking, or even deck
sitting, as we explore this great area. Day three begins with the
gradual climb to Crooked Creek Pass, on the way to the Peter Estin Hut
at 11,200'.
We should arrive in time to challenge one of the nearby peaks on foot.
Day four starts with a long downhill, as we lose over 3,000' in
elevation, on our way back to the Frying Pan River.
But it's quickly back to the high country, as we begin a gradual climb
on the old Midland Railroad route on our way to the Betty Bear Hut, for
the fourth night.
Day five brings us to the high point of this trip, as we ride to the
Continental Divide at Hagerman Pass (11,925').After catching our
breath, and enjoying the spectacular views of the Mosquito Range and
the Arkansas Valley below,
we'll enjoy an exhilarating downhill to the shores of Turquoise Lake,
where our shuttle will transport us back to Aspen.
